How Do You Q? San Diego's Take on Smoked Meats

You are here:

The San Diego Bay Wine + Food Festival will be smokin’—smoking meats, that is.

Whatever style of barbecue you prefer, it’s available in restaurants all over Greater San Diego. Chefs are grilling meat up and down the coast, at inland locations in North County, out in the East County, and down in South Bay.

There may not be a distinctive “San Diego style” of barbecue. Nonetheless, local eateries are doing innovative things within traditional barbecue styles associated with Kansas City (thick, sweet and tangy), Eastern North Carolina (spicy and acidic), South Carolina (mustard sauce), Texas (glaze), and other hot spots.

Prefer ribs? Brisket? Pulled pork? It’s all on the menu.

Barbecue + Bourbon

Plenty of barbecue will be served during the 16th Annual San Diego Bay Wine + Food Festival, with top culinary talent firing up the grills at the Grand Tasting VIP Live Fire Experience on Saturday, November 16. During the week leading up to the Grand Tasting, two incredible events will focus on Q-ing.

Barbecue + Bourbon at Coronado Island Marriott Resort & Spa

Sunday, November 10, 12-3 p.m.

There’s no better setting to celebrate Veteran’s Day than Coronado Island—a family-oriented bayside location that’s home to a major naval base. Some of San Diego’s most talented pit masters will join forces at the Coronado Island Marriott to share their take on San Diego barbecue.

An exciting addition to this year’s Veteran’s Day BBQ is the festival’s first Awesome Sauce Competition. Chefs from around the city will submit their secret sauce in a quest to be named the Most Awesome Sauce of the San Diego Bay Wine + Food Festival. And as the name implies, there will be plenty of bourbon to wash it all down with.

Smoked: A Live Fire Experience

Thursday, November 15, 6-9 p.m.

After celebrating Veteran’s Day at Barbecue + Bourbon, you’ll have a few days to make room for a family-style feast at Quartyard. Fun and funky, Quartyard is an open-air event space in downtown San Diego’s East Village. Adding to the nighttime ambiance and hearty cuisine, dinner will be paired with beer and whiskey and a blues concert by Harmonica John under the stars.

Two local chefs are lined up to curate a four-course menu in campfire fashion including Tommy Fraioli of 10 Barrel Brewing and Ivan Munoz of The Deck at Moonshine Flats.
